General Anaesthesia

For complex procedures or significant anxiety, general anaesthesia means you're fully asleep and aware of nothing.

What it is

Under general anaesthesia, you're fully unconscious for the procedure, administered and monitored by a qualified anaesthetist. It's typically arranged through a hospital or day surgery facility rather than in-chair.

Who it's for

This is usually reserved for extensive treatment in a single sitting, severe dental phobia where even sedation isn't enough, or patients (including some children) who can't tolerate treatment while conscious.

Is it riskier than sedation?

General anaesthesia carries more considerations than IV sedation, which is why it involves a qualified anaesthetist and typically a hospital setting — we'll talk through whether it's actually necessary for your situation, or whether sedation is enough.

Will I need someone with me?

Yes — you'll need a responsible adult to take you home and stay with you afterward.
